The adoption process can often seem endless. When the adoption is complete and you take your child home, there can be a tremendous sense of relief. After Your Adoption Is Complete
Whether you use an agency or bring a new child into your family through a private adoption, you will receive a signed judgment of adoption within a couple of weeks of the final hearing. You will also be entitled to a new birth certificate, naming you and your spouse or partner as parents of the child. The birth certificate process may take up to four months.
Once you have received the new birth certificate, you can file for a Social Security number for your child. You will be required to include this number on your tax return in order to claim your child as a dependent. You can also obtain a temporary Tax ID (identification) number for your child until the actual social security card is issued. For tax purposes, you may also be eligible for an adoption tax credit. The current tax credit for 2018 is $13,840 for eligible costs associated with any type of adoption. We will advise you how this credit works and what you must do to obtain it.
